If you're trying to choose between Krav Maga, BJJ, and MMA for self-defense — you're asking the right question. But the answer depends on what you actually want: sport competition or real-world protection.
Let's be direct. All three systems produce capable fighters. But they're built for different environments. If you're choosing for sport competition and you want to compete — BJJ or MMA. If you want to protect yourself and your family in the real world — Krav Maga.
BJJ is one of the most effective ground fighting systems in existence. It teaches you to control, submit, and neutralize opponents through leverage and technique — not strength. The problem: it's built for sport. One opponent, no weapons, mat environment, referee. In a parking lot against someone who's armed or who has a friend nearby, those rules don't exist.
MMA combines striking, wrestling, and ground work into a complete combat sport. MMA fighters are excellent athletes and dangerous opponents. But again — it's sport. Weight classes, rounds, referees, no weapons. Real threats don't tap out.
Krav Maga was developed for the Israeli Defense Forces. It has no rules because real violence has no rules. It trains you for multiple attackers, weapons, chokes, grabs, and ambush scenarios. The goal isn't to win a fight — it's to survive it and get home safe.
At Excelsior Self Defense & Fitness, we're the only KMW-licensed facility in Middle Georgia, teaching the official KMW curriculum used by law enforcement and military training programs worldwide.
Bottom line: if your goal is sport, train sport. If your goal is real-world defense for yourself and your family — Krav Maga is built for that. Start your free 7-day trial and judge for yourself.

Absolutely. Many MMA practitioners cross-train in Krav Maga to fill in the gaps around weapons, multiple attackers, and street scenarios their sport training doesn't cover.
